After all my fly tying stuff got stolen I got an old vise on the tradera auction site, but I´d really like somethin better than this. Don´t know what make it is, I just know it´s of mediocre manufacturing and I´d like something better.

What would you recommend?

Thanks,

Mats

I know I am late on this, but I love the HMH, it is the vise I have been tying on sense 1973. That said, you know I run a fly tying school here in the winter months, and I have collected some 5 different vices and looking for more, because you should have a chance to tye on a vice before you go out and spend a lot of money on one. I have True Rotary, and Rotary. I am happy with just Rotary I have one HMH standard set on level plain just for Classic Atlantic Salmon fly tying, and can use it for silk and ribbing so much neater than my old way. At my Wed. (this morning) there will be 4 HMH vices, 3 Nor-Landers, 1 Danvice (that I believe comes from your part of the world), and 1 Regal, I may just for fun break out one I just picked up a 1930 era Paul Young vice. (Paul Young had quite a fly shop and was a great tyer before he started building rods)

Hi Mats I ordered a Sportfish Rotary Vise http://www.sportfish.co.uk/product/sportfish-rotary-vice but I haven't seen it yet. It's probably of low quality but the pricing was nice. I'll give a more detailed report with some pics when I have it in my hands... which should be today.

and a couple more

It might not be a Regal, Dyna-King or HMH but for the price of 40£ I think it might be a bargain. Quality is fully acceptable for a vise in that price range. At first impression it's precise and easy to use, I'll give a full report later. I think it costs around 700 SEK if bought here in Sweden. For me it's not an option the money saved on not bying a Regal, are spent on rods instead Wink...

Thanks guys.

The vice looks good Magnus. Looking forward to hear what you think after some use.

Dave.
I know you have some stuff man. But I´m not sure of what you mean by "break one out" (Scandinavian you know..)? You man you could part with one for me?
As for Paul Young, I kind of knew there was something you connected with there. That stainless steel folding cup I handed you in July is supposed to be a Paul Young "Trik-kup" knock off. But you already knew that...

Mats,
The Paul Young vice is very very old, and just one to have in a collection of more crap to put in the shop. That said when you see one you will see where Regal came up with there vice. The other reason to have one, it says Paul Young on it.

David

Which is a reason as good as any.  For me, it probably would have been THE reason.

Btw; the deer hair fly you gave me as a dry for the dropper set-up on the river works well for trout over here also, just so you know.   Wink

I've now used the vice and I'm overall pleased with the function. It's a good value vise but it lacks some. In the tying I do I scarcely tie bigger flies than size 12. The smaller sizes a little more fiddle to tie using this. The chuck is also a little bit to big and a little bit annoying. However notice that there a lot of "little bits" in my short review. The vise is overall good and if you don't want to spend a fortune it might be suitable.

Well, if you find some stuff annoying that would probably mean I will too. Not that your vise would be poor or anything, but I would probably regret myself knowing I could have done better.

Thanks for telling.

It's a good precision vise if you exclude the chuck-details, but that just doesn't work with a flytying-vise does it? That's the worst thing, that it's an overall great construction. If the chuck would have been narrower it would be perfect. I've now sold it and got myself a Danica Innovation Rotary Vise. A little on the plastic side but it fits my hands better...
